One of the very first rules repeatedly imparted on me by art teachers or in-store stylists was that certain colors should never be seen together. Black and blue were perpetually on that list (in fact they usually constituted it), but I never could understand why. The few times I managed to sneak a navy crewneck above my darkest jeans I was impressed, if only to swiftly be reminded of the cardinal rule and handed something grey.
Despite years of contrary advice, I’m adamant black and blue can live in harmony… it’s just about creating balance. A dark leather jacket is always a good place to start (it works with everything). I’ve paired my varsity patchwork number above a deep navy neoprene sweater and skinny black jeans by Nudie. Importantly, my new blue suede shoes (by UGG – and beyond comfortable, the rumors are true!) anchor the whole thing. I suppose incorporating a mix of textures is important, if only to throw the eye off the fact that nothing quite matches.
